It’s not very easy to write a cookbook for sailors. I would know because I am both a sailor and an avid cook, and there are very few cookbooks that I consider worth my time. The most obvious problem is that my bookshelf space is limited, so I must choose carefully. Some books that I love to cook from on land just don’t work on a cruising sailboat. Exciting, esoteric ingredients that the author suggests “ordering online” frustrate me endlessly — order them to what address?

Baked goods that must bake at a very precise temperature for a very long time aren’t the ideal choice for my propane oven. And fridge space, a common struggle even in a normal sized house, is even more limited on a sailboat. Catherine Lawson and David Bristow wrote The Hunter & The Gatherer as a cookbook for the modern sailor. They’re uniquely positioned to do this: they have sailed and cooked together for two decades, and along the way their daughter Maya joined them on board. They’re passionate about good health, good flavors, and attainable ingredients. Before even opening it, the cookbook speaks to a sailor’s sensibilities: relatively small, lightweight, but still packed with vibrant photos on glossy paper and a clean, modern layout.
